This advance technology is really useful.

I have the Starkey 300 series hearing aids and they have proven to be the best hearing aids I have had to date. What has not been up to par however, is the SurfLink device that was acquired separately. This device was touted by my audiologist to be the best thing going for a business professional – streaming audio with a directional microphone, bluetooth enabled so I can talk on my cellphone over my hearing aids or listen to media which is streamed directly to my hearing aids…

I am on the second such device in three weeks and still the sound quality is not what it should be. Starkey’s techs make excuses for it and in one case have even claimed to have upgraded my firmware – tell me, why does a brand new unit sent straight from the factory need a firmware update? When you customized it, didn’t you make sure it had the latest firmware? Apparently not because that’s what Starkey told me they did. But did they? I can’t tell because the unit they sent back was a different one. While the distortion is not as bad as the first unit, it’s still there along with a constant hiss coming through the hearing aids. Starkey’s techs claim that’s normal and due to the codecs involved but even my cell phone bluetooth headset works better!

Would I recommend Starkey’s hearing aids? Yes, at least the 300 series I am familiar with. Would I recommend the SurfLink device? NOPE. Not until Starkey gets the bugs out and brings the sound quality up to where it should be instead of making excuses. This device is supposed to be cutting edge technology. Well Starkey… it’s NOT!

I am especially curious as to how the Comfort Digisystem DT10 Mini Receiver performs. I’ve heard from several independent sources that it has an unsatisfactory sound quality compared with the other receivers.

Our preliminary tests confirm it is a very poor system, as you can see by the photos of the battery drain. When the article is done, our lawyers will check it over before publishing.
