Bugfix Firmware Update For All ReSound LiNX & Enzo Hearing Aids… And They Screwed The Pooch With The Updater

If you own ReSound LiNX, Enzo or UP Smart, or corresponding Beltone First or Boost1 hearing aids shipped before October 27th, contact your hearing aid professional for a free firmware update to address iOS connection problems, add the long push button hold to enable Mini Mic & TV streaming, and also correct a datalogging glitch.

However, the reason why The Hearing Blog is issuing its’ own Support Bulletin is that ReSound “screwed the pooch” on this one: Their instructions supplied with the software don’t mention the special battery door that has the required CS44 programming socket needed to update the Enzo (oops!), they don’t warn to make a backup of the hearing aid settings before upgrading (oy gevelt!), and they don’t warn against not having battery backup when upgrading the firmware, which can “brick” the aids if there’s a power glitch (facepalm). Putting it gently, your friends here at The Hearing Blog just saved you from three potential Oh merde! moments.

We just received a package containing build 120 of Aventa 3.7  (3.7.0.120)  with an advisory to update from previous versions (we were running build 87) and instructions to upgrade the firmware using a NOAHlink or HiPro wired programmer. This firmware update addresses the following three issues:

  • Long push on the top program shift button to switch to Unite Mini Mic & TV Transmitter 2 streaming, to match the functionality in the older Alera & Verso hearing aids;
  • Correct a datalogging glitch in the LiNX 7 & 9 & corresponding UP Smart 7 & 9 aids which previously showed devices in “quiet” environment when using Basic + Softswitching;
  • Faster connection of the Made for iPhone (MFi) LiNX, Enzo, and UP Smart hearing aids to iOS devices.2
How to prepare for and perform the bugfix
  • First, if you need to upgrade the Enzo, you must order and install the special programming battery door part #13118322 which has the CS44 & DAI socket (oops!);
  • Along with the wired programming boots & battery doors, order the memory stick, or download the Aventa 3.7.0.120 update package [5/16/2015: The latest Aventa version is 3.8]. For your convenience, you can download the latest Aventa bits at this link;
  • If running quit Aventa, and run Setup.EXE;
  • Install the CS44 socket boots (312 & 13) or socket battery doors, plug in the CS44 programming cables, and connect the instruments to your NOAHlink or HiPro;
  • Create a new user in NOAH which will be the backup in case of trouble and launch Aventa 3.7 build 120, and reconnect it to your NOAHlink or HiPro;
  • Make sure the batteries in your laptop & NOAHlink are freshly charged, and if you have a desktop PC and/or HiPro, make sure they are plugged into an uninterruptable power supply (UPS), as a power glitch during the firmware update can brick the aid;
  • If you’re running Aventa in standalone mode, create a new user in the patient screen for backup, then click the Aventa box in the upper right corner;

  • Connect Aventa to the aids: Instrument menu → Read Instrument;
  • Click Save in the lower right corner, which saves it to the NOAH or Aventa standalone database as your backup;
  • Once the data has saved to the separate backup entry in the database: Instrument menu → Restore Instrument → nag box ContinueFull Restore (with latest firmware) → pick the left or right instrument → rinse and repeat with the other aid;
  • Now you have a blank aid, so click Connect to restore the patient settings, then Fitting menu → Read from database, and follow the prompts.

Now, aren’t you glad you read The Hearing Blog so your patients will have a smooth upgrade, without that embarrassing call to Dial-a-Prayer, err, tech support while the patient is sitting in your office?!

The Hearing Blog  suspects the MFi update is related to the disastrous iOS 8.0 rollout with a new Bluetooth 4.x Low Energy (BLE) stack that caused havoc with both ReSound & Starkey MFi aids, and the subsequent iOS 8.1 bugfixes. This is typical of Apple “point zero” OS releases going back 20+ years (System 7.0, anybody?) that don’t have adequate regression testing, essentially turning their user base into paying beta testers. Crap like Apple pulls is why Microosoft has run their excellent Windows Hardware Compatibility (now Windows Hardware Quality) Lab for two decades, and is the reason why their Windows NT OS (now at Windows 8) is enterprise-grade rock solid;
  3. We are Not Pleased that ReSound will not release Aventa update patch files, insisting on sending out huge binaries with useless 40 megabyte multimedia files in every language except Swahili…

    Thanks for this information. Any idea how much faster the connection to the iPhone will be after the upgrade? It is currently rather slow like 3-5s when answering a call. Is it also more stable and consistent as now it tends to be hit and miss.

    Pity, I cannot do it with the airlink 🙁

      Gary, I don’t know, because my Enzo HA’s came through with the new firmware. Basically, the way Bluetooth 4 Low Energy (“BLE”) is able to get a year out of a coin cell battery is that it stays asleep 99.9% of the time, only waking up once a minute to see if there’s any data to transfer. Obviously for MFi hearing aids this is Unacceptable, so ReSound & Starkey use a shorter interval to poll the iPhone. What I believe this firmware update does is trade off battery life for more frequent polling and signalling.

      Also, did you upgrade to iOS 8.1 yet?

        Yes already on iOS 8.1. If it is better user experience then i don’t mind trading off battery too much 🙂 How long does it take for you aids to work after answering a call?

        Connectivity seems dodgy to me. I have an iPad and iPhone and sometimes the MFI multiple devices works and sometimes one hearing aid connects to one iDevice and the other hearing aid to the other iDevice.

        I will try to schedule a firmware update and see if there are improvements and keep you posted.
